MTwain_UESD: Good Evening Families and Staff, This is Ms. Paula, Superintendent, MTUESD. I wanted to reach out and connect one final time regarding the safety issue that arose at Mark Twain Elementary, beginning yesterday. I know that Ms. Shaw reached out a bit earlier to update you on all of today's precautions and activities to ensure the safety of our students. This message is equally important. First, I want you to know that I did speak with the parent of the individual at the center of the concern. I want to also confirm that the student will not be returning to any school in our district. Secondly, I want to thank you for your patience and understanding with the two auto-dialers, the one from me arriving quite late. We felt it was important to provide as much information as we could to quell fears and anxiety regarding the safety of our school. Next, I want to commend Ms. Shaw and her staff for her communication and commitment to your children. I appreciate Badger Boosters and Copper PTC for allowing their facebook pages to be a platform to get information to families. I want to thank Scott Nanik, Bret Harte Superintendent, for working closely with me to make sure that our community could be confident in our commitment to school remaining a safe place to learn. And, without fail I want to thank and acknowledge Angels Camp PD, specifically Officer Savage who worked well into the night with Ms. Shaw and myself for the sole purpose of protecting our children and schools. Officer Savage coordinated with Sheriff and CHP, which was appreciated by all. Finally, I would like to strongly encourage you to have or start having an open dialog with your children along with on-going, active monitoring of not only what groups your child associates with on social media, what others are posting in these platforms, and what your child might be posting. Have a good evening and I look forward to seeing you next week at the Back to School Nights. Dear Mark Twain Families,
This is Ms. Paula, Superintendent. I apologize for the lateness of this call. However, it is important. You heard from Ms. Shaw earlier. She, myself, and law enforcement have continued to work on the safety concern. Your child's safety is of the utmost importance. We have appreciated that with every call we made that more information is coming to light. Thank you to all of our students who have included their parents. And, thank you to all the parents who have immediately called. us. At this point, with new information, I want you to know that Ms. Shaw is working diligently and will be with her staff tomorrow to maintain the safety of all students. We are in the process of conducting a full threat assessment and determining safety and until it is without a doubt safe, the individual student or students in question will not be on our campus. We have also alerted our neighbor Bret Harte High School and Copperopolis Elementary. We believe our planning and coordinated efforts will maintain the safety of all children. Again, we thank you for your support and continued communication.

Special Board Meeting July 14th at 5:00 p.m.
July 8, 2022, 2022
Dear Parents, Staff, Neighbors, Friends and Broader Copperopolis and Angels Camp Communities,
The Mark Twain Union Elementary School District is comprised of two schools: Mark Twain Elementary School (TK-8) in Angels Camp, and Copperopolis Elementary School (TK-6) in Copperopolis. Each of the District's small schools provides a rigorous and stimulating, yet caring, educational program for its students.
Mark Twain was built 69 years ago. Copper was built 70 years ago and our district acquired it 42 years ago from our neighboring district. We have always repaired and maintained the classrooms and facilities at both to the best of our abilities, but with limited resources. In 2004, the District’s voters approved Measure “K”, which constructed the new gym at Mark Twain, completed some repairs at both schools and began preparing for substantial growth in Copperopolis. However, much of the anticipated residential construction still has not come, so we had to amend our plans accordingly.
Now, nearly 20 years has passed since Measure “K”, and more needs have been identified as our campuses have aged. Indeed, a recent assessment report identified more than $30 million in total facilities needs at Copper and Mark Twain. So, the Board is now evaluating all available sources of funding, including State TK facilities grants, State facilities matching funds, money we have saved over the years, as well as a new bond measure – all of which will hopefully help us meet our most critical facilities priorities in the coming years.
But before the Board decides to ask the community for another investment, we want to continue sharing as much information as possible and gaining as much feedback as we can. Additionally, we are continuing to reach out– and we invite you all to join us at our meeting at 5:00 PM on Thursday, July 14 at 981 Tuolumne Ave. in Angels Camp in the District board room to provide more input before we act on a resolution to place a new bond measure on the ballot.
Please attend the July 14 meeting and/or let us know what you think by emailing myself (pwyant@mtwain.k12.ca.us) or the Board President, Timothy Randall (trandall@mtwain.k12.ca.us) or calling me at 209.735.1858. Please feel free to share with neighbors, families, and friends. And thanks again!
Most Sincerely,
Paula M. Wyant, Superintendent
