Mark Twain Union Elementary School District Honors History with naming of Altaville School for Independent Study
ANGELS CAMP, CA — The Mark Twain Union Elementary School District (MTUESD) is proud to announce the opening of the Altaville School for Independent Study, an educational program that draws deep inspiration from the district's storied past. By revitalizing the timeless principles of the one-room schoolhouse, this innovative school of choice offers a highly personalized learning experience for students in grades 4-8.
The new program is named in honor of the original Altaville Grammar School that was folded into what is now Mark Twain Elementary School in 1950. The school still stands as a California State Historical Landmark built in 1858. This historic school served as a cornerstone of the community for nearly a century, and its legacy of student-centered learning and community collaboration laid the groundwork for the district's innovative approach today.
The Altaville School for Independent Study is designed to bring these historical principles into the 21st century. The program is intentionally limited to just 25 students, ensuring the kind of personalized attention and strong sense of community that were hallmarks of the original one-room schoolhouse.
A Modern Approach to Personalized Learning
This tuition-free public school combines research-based practices with a modern blended learning model. Teachers collaborate closely with parents to create an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) for every student, tailoring curriculum and instruction to meet their unique needs and aspirations.
Key features of the program include:
A Hybrid Learning Model: The program offers both in-person and virtual learning experiences to provide flexibility and support.
Peer-to-Peer Mentorship: Students work together in small multi-grade level teams, fostering a dynamic and collaborative learning environment.
Teacher as Facilitator: Teachers guide students through self-directed learning, using data to inform decisions and ensure a path of true mastery.
Open Enrollment
Enrollment is open for the 2025-26 school year until all 25 spots are filled. The program is available to families within the district and, through interdistrict transfers, to families across Calaveras County. Please contact the MTUESD office for application and enrollment information.
